10 Relaxing Spa Treatments for Men

4 min read

As a man, a spa day is probably the last thing on your agenda. It gets really confusing when you see the different spa treatments offered. Knowing how a hydro massage differs from aromatherapy might seem hard. Services like massages, facials, and body treatments are examples of spa treatments.

In Nigeria today, there is a shortage of spas offering spa services exclusively for men. Spa treatments range from as low as N2,999 to over N300,000 depending on where the service is offered.

A spa treatment is a way to relax and uplift your mood. Here are 10 spa treatments for men:

1. Deep Tissue/Sport Massage

This type of massage focuses on the deepest layers of muscle tissues and tendons. It is mostly beneficial for muscle pulls. A sports massage is great to treat repeated muscle pulls.

2. Aromatherapy

This involves the use of essential oils. Essential oils are believed to stimulate brain function and promote body healing. Aromatherapy is usually regarded as a form of alternative medicine due to its applications in body healing, pain relief, mental stimulation and mood enhancement.

3. Facials

Calm down. It doesn’t make you any less of a man. A facial simply focuses on cleaning your skin pores. Some spas might even offer special face treatments especially for men. So, ask your spa what options they have for you. Facials help to remove the toxins that collect in our skin pores. Getting rid of this allows your skin to ‘breathe’ and this slows down signs of aging.

4. Erectile Dysfunction massage

It happens. The main question is how do we avoid it? An ED massage is a medicinal spa treatment. Your therapist will massage your abdominal and pelvic structures to realign your reproductive organs. This allows blood flow to the needed regions. While this is a practice worldwide, no Nigerian spa currently offers this.

5. Manicure and Pedicure

On the service list of spas, you will likely see this referred to as ‘Feet Retreat’, ‘Hand Renewal’ and so on. It is simply a treatment that focuses on washing, cleaning and moisturizing your hands or feet. It is sometimes done in conjunction with other spa treatments. You have to get those feet looking clean in sandals or slippers.

6. Body Exfoliation

This involves the use of a body scrub. It starts off with a rough scrub for the outer dead skin cells, and then a gentle scrub. How is all this beneficial? It makes your skin smooth and aids blood circulation.

7. Acupuncture

Yes, the hot stones, tough massages, and needles. Acupuncture is a spa technique that focuses on moving Qi (pronounced ‘chi’) around the body. The acupuncture needles are placed along paths where your Qi is concentrated and accessible. The sterile, single-use needles have the ability to adjust the flow of Qi and to also nourish the Qi in areas where it has been depleted. Benefits of acupuncture include natural healing, increase in recuperative power, treatment of musculoskeletal disorders (neck pain, knee pain, arthritis, back pain, chronic pain etc) and enhanced body/soul health. Despite the use of needles, it is actually painless. There are acupuncture services and centers in Lagos.

8. Slimming and Firming

Spas offer slimming and firming spa treatments to strengthen muscles, reduce body weight and give overall body fitness. Slimming also helps regulate your blood pressure.

9. Hydrotherapy

Water therapy? Yes, and it isn’t the same as swimming. Hydrotherapy involves the use of a warm-water pool with water at temperatures of 32-37 degree Celsius (swimming pool water is 25-27 degree Celsius). The idea behind Hydrotherapy is subjecting the body to slow, controlled movements while relaxing it at the same time. This is done to cure different body conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis and others. It consists of special exercise routines done in the pool with the aid of a therapist. Some spas use alternative methods like combining hot and cold water to soothe and awaken the body.

10. Waxing

Most spas offer waxing services. Waxing is a hair removal technique which involves the application of hot wax to the skin. A strip of cloth or paper is placed on the wax and pulled off. Men often wax their legs and underarms.

The spa treatments covered above might not be all the spa you choose has to offer. Make sure to ask your spa for a full list of their services. If you’ve never been to a spa, here is a guide for spa newbies. To find spas in Nigeria, check www.vconnect.com
