How To Do Your Makeup Like a Professional

We are in an era where there seems to be a lot of Nigerian makeup artists. So many women walk around with flawless faces. This creates the temptation to get your makeup done professionally almost everyday. However, professional makeup is not cheap.

Professionally done makeup might look like magic. You may have tried to draw your brows several times but they still don’t look right. If you constantly wonder how makeup artists do it, this is for you. We have compiled a list of tips and tricks that will have you looking flawless. Here you go:

Invest in products and tools

Makeup artists use almost twenty different products and tools to get a flawless looking face. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. However, they actually use several tools and products.

Building a makeup kit that includes quality products and tools is essential to doing your makeup like a pro. Remember that quality doesn’t always mean expensive. Some make-up artists even improvise. For example, a lot of makeup artists use milk of magnesia as a primer. There are several other replacements for certain makeup products. As long as you have everything you need, you’ll be fine. This is a list of brushes and tools that will transform your makeup application.

A little goes a long way

If you ever watch a makeup artist do their job, you’ll notice something. They don’t use as much quantity of each product as non-makeup artists do. They use just enough foundation, concealer and other products. It is not by how much foundation you apply, but how you apply it. This goes for every other makeup product. Pay more attention to the technique and you’ll be on your way to creating a flawless look.

Primer and Setting Spray

Have you ever wondered why your makeup wears off after a few hours, but professionally done makeup lasts all day? The products. As we previously mentioned, the products you use are very important.

Primer and setting spray make a huge difference. Primer creates a smooth base for your makeup. With the primer, it is easier to apply different layers of products and blend. Meanwhile, setting spray prevents smudging and sweating out. As the name implies, it sets your makeup in place.

Brows

If you’ve been filling in your brows with black pencil, stop it. Based on your skin color you can use a dark or lighter shade of brown, but not black. Black pencil will make your brows look unnatural. You don’t want that.

To fill in your brows, use light hair-like strokes and focus on the sparse areas. Make sure you shape the outer area with your concealer close to the color of your skin. Shaping the outer area of your brows makes it look neater.  Here is a step by step breakdown on how to fill in your brows.

Eyeliner

The key to improving your makeup skills is to try different looks. Don’t just stick to lining your inner brow line, try a winged liner. If you find it hard to draw a winged liner, start from the outermost corner of your lower lid, this helps you control the same and length. Look at pictures of makeup looks and try to replicate them. You’ll get better at it.

Highlight and Contour

Believe it or not, you can highlight and contour without it being extremely obvious. Your face will look pleasantly different, people might just not understand why. Try as much as possible to give the impression of a natural highlight. Make sure you work with the shape of your face.

Blend

Blending is a major aspect of makeup. Flawless makeup is based on the principles of blending. From concealer application, to creating depth with eye shadow, you need to blend to get that professional look.

The ultimate judge is the camera flash test. When you take a picture of your made up face, the camera flash brings out all the flaws. If you do not blend well, the different colors and patches of makeup will stand out. Once you know how to blend, harsh lines, crease lines and so on, you are already considered a pro.

When in doubt, ask YouTube

As ridiculous as this may sound, a lot of makeup artists actually learned from YouTube videos. Just make sure you’re learning from someone with a similar skin color. Practice makes perfect. As you learn and practice more makeup looks and skills, you will get better.

Try out these makeup tips and let us know how it goes.
