7 precautions you must take when fumigating

Fumigation is a process of using chemicals to get rid of pests in homes, buildings or processed goods like food or wood.

The pests most common in Nigeria are rats, cockroaches, termites or mosquitoes.

If you have a pest problem in your home or office, you have probably had people tell you to fumigate your place.

The tricky thing with fumigation is that because the chemicals used are also dangerous to humans, there are precautions you need to take before fumigating your house.

Here are 7 of such precautions to take:

1. Throw out or preserve perishable food

Fumigation chemicals could be poisonous if eaten, so if you have food lying around, then you will need to throw away the ones that can not be preserved and the refrigerate the rest. if you have food in the fridge, make sure the fridge is properly closed.

2. Properly seal doors and windows

Gaseous fumigation is often the method used to fumigate buildings, therefore it is important that the area fumigated is properly suffused with the gases.

If the doors or windows are not properly sealed some of the gases might be dispelled outside, reducing the effect of chemicals used to fumigate.

3. Remove beddings and curtains

Remove all covers from, mattresses, also remove curtains and drapes. The fabric of your curtains and bedsheets can retain some of the chemicals which can be harmful after the fumigation has been done.

4. Turn off all flames

Turn off stoves, heaters and any other fire making appliance in the building. The gases can sometimes be flammable and any open flame could lead to a fire.

5. Open internal doors and cabinets

Keep the doors between rooms open. Same goes for cupboards, closets, cabinets, wardrobes inside the house. Because these pests are often small, they like to hide in dark places like cupboards and wardrobes.

6. Remove pets and houseplants

If you have house pets like fish, cats, hamsters or anything else that lives in the house, you should remove them too. Do not forget to remove your houseplants too so the fumigation doesn’t kill your precious plants.

7. Arrange for alternate accommodation

Make sure you have your bags packed, and a place for you to stay or work from while the fumigation goes on is available. This way you do not have to worry about being productive or comfortable while the fumigation goes on.
